Article* | 19 August 1893 | "The Nepean Times", Penrith, NSW; DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT, —One by one they are dropping off. Nearly every week we have to record the death of one or more of those who have helped to make this grand District of the Nepean what it is. There are very few old residents who do not remember the kindly and jolly face of Johnny Purcell, as he was more familiarly called. Mr. Purcell was a native of the district, and was the eldest son of the late Mr. Charles Purcell, from whom he inherits the property on which he resided at Castlereagh for a lifetime. Deceased had a large family, all of whom are grown up. He was said to be fairly well possessed of this world's goods; was a first-class judge and breeder of horses, and was also successful as an agriculturist and horticulturist. He had been ill for some time from an internal complaint, and was attended by Dr. Barber, who, however, gave very little hopes of his ultimate recovery. On Friday of last week he became worse, and Father Sheridan had barely in time to administer the last rites of the Roman Catholic Church ere his spirit had fled. The funeral took place on Sunday, and was a large and representative one, there being upwards of 50 vehicles, and about the same number of horsemen. The remains were enclosed In an elaborate cedar polished coffin, and were conveyed to Cranebrook Cemetery. Mr. Arthur Price (for Mrs. John Price) conducting.19 |
