Article | 21 February 1911 | "The Sydney Morning Herald", NSW; DROWNING ACCIDENT. PENRITH, Monday. A sad case of drowning occurred in the Nepean River on Wednesday last, by which Mr. Samuel Sheens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sheens, of Castlereagh, aged 36 years, lost his life. He attempted to swim the river, and his brother watched him for a time till he got out of sight. After some time his brother became alarmed and went for assistance. A party was soon organised, and early on Saturday morning, about two miles from where Sheens went in, his body was found caught in a fallen tree.6 |
Article* | 25 February 1911 | "The Gazette", NSW; Samuel Sheens, son of ex-Alderman Sheens, of Castlereagh, while crossing the Nepean River, about four miles from Penrith on the 15th inst, was drowned. He was swimming across after cattle, and had almost reached the opposite bank when the current took him round the bend of the river which is about 200 yards wide. The water was running very strongly, with a rise of over 6ft, on account of heavy rain. That was the last seen of him. Deceased was a nephew of Mr Charles Sheens of Windsor. The body was found on Saturday morning by deceased's brother and a man named Dennis, about five miles down the river from where he sank.7 |
