Article*21 October 1873 "The Sydney Morning Herald", NSW;
The iron ship Border Chief, Captain Leslie, arrived yesterday from London, having made her passage, with only ordinary weather in 90 days, from pilot to pilot – no mean performance when taking into consideration that she is deeply laden, and as a rule the wind not proving the most advantageous. The vessel has, however, come into port staunch and trim, and in first-class order, but her trip has been marked by a most calamitous loss of life. When off the pitch of the Cape of Good Hope, the ship then running before a violent gale from westward, a heavy sea broke over the starboard quarter, and carried overboard Mr. Alston, the 2nd officer, Jacob Jackersen, carpenter, and J. McIntosh, sailmaker. The vessel was under reefed upper topsails, and was tripping along about 13 knots, and making excellent weather. The second mate, carpenter, and sailmaker were securing the quarter scuttle hatch when the sea toppled on board, and swept them over the port quarter. The helmsman was thrown against the bulwarks, but, having fortunately secured himself by lashing to the head of the ruddercase, was saved. Strange o say the log-reel and deck buckets, that were in the usual rack aft, were found intact when the sea cleared off the ship. With respect to the passage, captain Leslie reports as follows: - Left the Start Point on 21st July, where the pilot was discharged; had light westerly winds to Madiera, where the N E trades were picked up and were carried to latitude 15 N. and longitude 20 30 W., from thence had variable winds to meeting the S E trades, which were taken in latitude 3 N. The Equator was crossed on 18th August, in longitude 24.30W., 28 days out. The trades carried the ship to latitude 24 S, when westerly weather set in, and the meridian of the Cape of Good Hope was passed on 8th September, on which date the lamentable loss of life occurred. The meridian of St. Paul’s was passed on the 20th September, in latitude 43.38 S. the run having been made from the Cape of Good Hope in 12 days. Crossed the meridian of Cape Leuwin on the 1st October, in latitude 44S; from thence northerly winds have prevailed. The S W. Cape of Tasmania was rounded on 9th October, 80 days out, and the ship after beating up this coast against a strong southerly set, sighted Sydney light early on Monday morning. The Border chief is to the consignment of Messrs. Danger, Gedye, and Co.6

Article6 October 1899 "The Bathurst Daily Free Press and Mining Journal", NSW;
The Governor and the Dreyfus Case.
AN ADDRESS OF PROTESTATION.
The following address of the French residents of Sydney to their Consul-General in Sydney has been Published : —
'Monsieur le Consul-General, — We have been severely tried and deeply affected by the unkind comments published by some of the Australian papers re the Dreyfus affair, although we felt somewhat comforted by the thought that the good sense of the public, naturally generous and lover of, fair play, would easily give to exaggerated criticism its due share.
" But when we see the representative of her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria sanction with his own lips in some official function allegations insulting to France, when we hear him at a banquet at Cobar denouncing our primordial institutions, then we think the measure is full, and that we cannot any longer keep silent in the face of such uncalled-for and unwarranted action.
" Wounded in our innermost feelings, humbled in our national pride, we rise up in a body and rally round our flag.
' We naturally turn to you, Monsieur le Consul-General, who in this foreign land are the guardian of our national honor.
' Before you we protest energetically and with indignation against the sentiments expressed by his Excellency the Governor of New South Wales in his speech at Cobar.
' We may have held different opinions on the Dreyfus question, but now that the Conseil de Guerre et Bennes has passed its final judgment, we cannot admit, to use the very words of Earl Beauchamp, that a hideous parody of justice has been perpetrated; that is to say — if we consider the full meaning of his words—that an innocent man has been wilfully sacrificed under cover of all the paraphernalia of justice, condemned by unconscientious judges, perverted beforehand to the cause of intolerance and bad faith. '
' We cannot admit that the army — our grand national institution, in which every French family, rich and poor, and without distinction of religious faith, is represented — has failed in the fulfilment of its mission, and has become a tool in the hands of a party.
' We cannot admit that the words - 'Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite,' engraved on the frontispiece of our public monuments, the basis of all our national laws and statutes, have been — as Earl Beauchamp further asserts, violated by our own judges.
' And whatever may be the unhappy circumstances which for several years have surrounded that case, we are, even at the risk of not sharing his Excellency's preferences, still proud to belong to that French nation which has rendered such great services to the cause of humanity and civilisation.
" We beg you, Monsieur le Consul-General, to receive the address of protestation, and use it to such ends as you may think fit.
" The cordial and generous hospitality accorded to us Frenchmen established here had led us to look upon Australia as a second home. We feel certain that his Excellency the Governor of New South Wales, by inflicting upon us such a public affront, has not been the interpreter of our Australian friends."
