About Me

My name is Carole Riley. I run a genealogy research business at www.nswgenealogy.com.au called Heritage Genealogy. I am based in Sydney, NSW, and I specialise in the records of the Colony of New South Wales from repositories including State Records NSW, the State Library of NSW and Mitchell Library, the NSW Lands Department, and the Society of Australian Genealogists. If you are unable to get there yourself, I can get the records you need to gain a more detailed picture of your ancestors’ lives. Please let me know how I can help you.

I am a Councillor of the Society of Australian Genealogists and a member of their IT, Website and Education Committees. I also serve as a director of the Association of Professional Genealogists.

My book Social Media for Family Historians was recently published by Unlock The Past.

I don’t think we can really understand ourselves fully until we have a broad knowledge of our family and our ancestors – what sort of people they were, what they did and what made them tick. I like to fill in as much of the detail about the lives of my ancestors as I can – how they arrived and where they came from, their land and property, and their occupations, as well as their marriages, divorces and children.

I have been “doing” my family history for many years now, and as new resources become available or more accessible there is always more to find out! Genealogy is a combination of learning, problem solving and logical analysis and that’s why I enjoy it so much. I like to share what I know, and what I learn, with others – not so much about my ancestors, but how you can find out more about yours.
