There are name indexes at the Lands Department but they have been taken off the shelves to be digitised. You can either wait for the indexes to go online (and I have no idea when that might be) or you can look at the parish map, preferably a later one. If your ancestor was the first titleholder his name will be on the portion, and the table of portions will have the date of the grant or the Volume and Folio number (for Torrens Title). The deeds are on the shelves in the Lands Department. It’s not easy if you’re not in Sydney to go there yourself.

It would be old system I’m guessing – around 1860… So how to find the deed? Thanks for your help.
(Oh, and I’ve also started loading some of my photos onto the Archives2share flicker account. Still got more to go…)

It depends on how the property was purchased. If it was under Torrens Title then you would need to see the title and then obtain a copy of the dealing that the property was purchased under. If it’s Old System you will need to find the deed.

By the way Carole, the properties that I have been looking at don’t appear to be conditional purchases, so there’s no point in looking in the conditional purchase register. Is there something else I can look at to see original purchase documents etc?
