"Beejapore" 1853
(Witness) Article12 January 1853 "The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser", NSW;
The Beejapore has made the passage from Liverpool in 85 days – the shortest run on record – bringing 911 immigrants. Unfortunately 56 deaths have occurred from measles and fever, and one death took place only three days ago, there are between 30 and 40 cases of sickness now on board. – Herald, Jan. 7. – The Beejapore, Captain McLay whose arrival we reported yesterday, embarked 967 Government emigrants at Liverpool, of whom 342 were children. Of the adults, about one half are from the Isle of Skye, and about 200 are Paisley weavers. Fifty-six deaths occurred on the passage, of which 55 were children, principally from scarlet fever and measles, the other death was that of an adult from apoplexy. Eighty was the number of cases of measles which occurred on board, and 20 of scarlet fever. At the present time there are only 13 patients under the doctor’s hands, all children suffering from measles, but most of these are in an improving state. The fever first emanated from the depot at Plymouth, in which, unfortunately, the emigrants resided previous to their embarkation. It is supposed that the ship will be released from quarantine about the end of next week – Herald, Jan. 8.;Principal=James Beedall, Principal=Jemima Beedall6

Municlpal Elections.
NOMINATION DAY.
PENRITH.
Some twenty or thirty people assembled at the Council Chambers, Penrith, on Tuesday last a little before 12 o'clock, for the purpose of watching the proceedings there, that day being Municipal nomination. The Mayor, Ald W C Fulton (Returning Officer), Ald Stewart, Reid, Vine, Player, Haynes, Hendren, Vallanco and Sheens were also present.
Precisely at 12 o'clock the Mayor read the advertisement stating that a nomination would take place that day, and then read the list of candidates and auditors and their nominators, as follow :—
FOR ALDERMEN :
South Ward—Alfred V. Reid, baker, High-street, Penrith ; nominated by F H Judges, George Nash, sen., William Dent, Louis Judges.
As there was only one nomination in this Ward, the Mayor declared Alfred V Reid duly elected.
North Ward—Edward Edmund Newton Haynes; nominated, by Arthur Judges, R D Graham, J R Woodland, and others. Thomas Dobson ; nominated by P Redden, F Horstmaun, R Foat, J Hollier.

Ald Sheens said he had not a big speech to make. He had done his best for Castlereagh Ward. He had tried to get some work done, but the council had not any money, and there was a great deal of opposition.
Mr Randall said he had heard a rumor that morning that the candidate's only reason for coming forward was to contest the Mayoral chair—was it a fact ?
Ald Sheens said no, he would not have it if they gave it to him.
Mr W H Dukes said he was like Mr Dobson, a colt in the field. His object in coming forward was because some of the ratepayers of Castlereagh Ward had told him Ald Sheens had not treated them right. He had not anything to say against Ald Sheens. If he had done his duty to the Ward he would like to see him elected, but if not then he would ask them to vote for him. If elected, he would not advocate any principle, but would do anything that was fair and above board.28

Municipal Elections.
PENRITH.
The polling for North and Castlereagh Wards took place on Saturday last, the polling booths be [sic] at the Council Chambers, and Mr B Reece's residence, Castlereagh. There was more excitement at both places, especially at Penrith, during the afternoon, than there has been for many years. The two candidates appeared to be on the best of terms, exchanging good-natured chaff with one another all through the day. The Mayor (Ald W C Fulton) acted as Returning Officer.
There was a fair muster at the official declaration at 6 o'clock, and when the Returning Officer announced the state of the poll, great surprise was felt. Following are the results :—
NORTH WARD.
T. M. Dobson … … … … 85
E. E. N. Haynes … … … 84
Informal … … … 2
Mr Dobson thus being elected as Alderman for that Ward.
CASTLEREAGH WARD.
W.H.Dukes ... ... ... 35
H. Sheens ... ... ... 23
Mr Dukes was declared duly elected.
Mr Dobson returned thanks, and said that, although only a beginner, he would do his best for the Municipality.
Mr Haynes followed, and made an assertion that he had been thrown out by some underhand engineering, and went on to explain how this occurred. He thanked all those who had voted for him.
Mr Dukes, after thanking the ratepayers of Castlereagh Ward for putting him in, spoke in a similar strain to what he did on Nomination Day, saying he would go on in a straight manner.
Mr Sheens duly thanked those who had plumped for him, and said the Opposition was too strong against him.
Mr Dobson proposed a vote of thanks to the Returning Officer for the impartial way in which he had carried out the election.
Mr Dukes seconded, and after this had been carried by the voices, cheers were given for the Queen.29
