Article*4 February 1905 "The Windsor and Richmond Gazette", Windsor, NSW;
We regret having to announce the death of Mr Matthew B. Herps, of Petersham, and late of Lower Portland. The immediate cause of death is said to have been typhoid fever, although it is well knownthat the deceased gentleman had been in ill-health for some time past. Messrs Johnand Thomas Herps, of Lower Portland, are brothers of the deceased. The late Mr Herps was one of the leading public men on the river. For many years he was adirector of the Hawkesbury Steam Navigation Company, and also held other publicoffices, including that of president of the Lower Portland Progress Association. Several years ago he was created a Justice of the Peace. A widow and large family ofchildren are left to mourn their loss, and tothem we extend our heartfelt sympathy. 18
