Death of Son | 13 October 1934 | Windsor Hospital, Windsor, NSW; OSWALD BERNETT HERPS HEARTFELT sympathy has been expressed on all sides for Mr . and Mrs. Fletcher Herps, of Lower Portland, on the very sad death of their second son, Oswald Bernett, an extremely popular and likeable young man, who passed away in the Windsor Hospital on Saturday last at the early age of 18 years. For about a week the deceased had been an inmate of the hospital with an acute attack of influenza, when pneumonia supervened and was the ultimate cause of death. By his quiet and unassuming manner, ''Ossie" Herps, as he was affectionately known to his intimates, was universally respected, and when the news of his death became known at midday on Saturday, it came as a severe blow (although perhaps not altogether unexpected), and his young associates were visibly affected. He was a keen and enthusiastic footballer and cricketer, and it was a sympathetic gesture on the part of the Sackvile B Grade cricketers, with whom he played, when they decided to forfeit their match on Saturday rather than play under such circumstances. The funeral took place on Monday from the Methodist Church, Windsor, whence the casket had been taken for a service conducted by the Rev. A. Graham, the remains being laid to rest in the West Portland cemetery. The funeral was largely attended, and as the officiating clergyman (Rev. A. J. Simson) remarked, was evidence of the respect and esteem in which the deceased and his family were held. Among the many beautiful floral tributes were wreaths from the Sackville Cricket Club and Lower Portland Football Club, both of which were well represented at the funeral. Mr. Chandler, was the undertaker. We extend sympathy to the parents and three brothers in their sad loss.;Principal=Oswald Bernett Herps8 |
