The coroner for the district, Mr. Brooke, held an inquiry at Trajerie, Eugowra Creek, on Tuesday, on the body of a young man named William Joseph Herbert, who was killed on Sunday evening through a horse he was riding running him against a tree. Deceased and his brother with two other young men wore out on horseback on Sunday afternoon kangaroo hunting, the horse that young Herbert was riding being of an exceedingly fractious and unmanageable temper. When about three miles from Eugowra on the road homewards deceased proposed putting their horses at a canter, when almost immediately his horse commenced to plunge and ran headlong against a dead box tree. Deceased's brother, who was a little ahead, heard the concussion, and on looking round saw the unfortunate young man off his horse at the foot of the tree. Death was almost instantaneous, the skull being terribly fractured, the left thigh broken, and the protruding bone forced into the lower part of the body. He was removed to the residence of his father, Mr. Edward Herbert, at Trajerie, where, as stated, a coroner's inquest was held on Tuesday morning and a verdict of accidental death was returned. The deceased was a very steady young man, a little over twenty-three years of age, and the accident was purely attributable to the vicious and unmanageable character of the horse he was riding. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert were on their way to Sydney at the time of the occurrence but were telegraphed for to return home, which they reached in time for the funeral on Tuesday afternoon, the ceremony being conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon Dunstan. It was only in February last that Mr. McMillan, a nextdoor neighbour of Mr. Herbert, lost his eldest son whilst driving a team of horses. Much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved family in their affliction.3
