Mr. A. T. Chatman
It is with deep regret we announce the passing of Mr. Arthur Thomas Chatman at Concord Repatriation Hospital on Sunday, September 20, aged 62 years.
The late Mr. Chatman had been in ill-health extending over 26 years. Much of that time had been spent in and out of hospital. He was a veteran of World War I. Enlisting early, he saw service at Gallipoli, Lone Pine and France, and served for over four years. It was the result of those war years that eventually caused his death.
Born at Eugowra, the late Arthur Chatman had lived in the district the whole of his life. On his return from active service he joined the staff of the N.S.W. Railway Department, at Eugowra, but later resigned owing to ill-health. Then for some years he had his own carrying business, but again sickness caused him to retire, and after selling his home, known as "Havilah," he went to Sydney, where he purchased a home at Punchbowl. There he resided until his return to hospital some months ago.
In his earlier years he was a keen and good football player, also an active member of the Eugowra Rifle Club. He was a foundation member of the Eugowra R.S.L., of which branch he was president for a number of years, also a member of the M.U.I.O.O.F.
His death is mourned by his widow, one daughter, Peg (Mrs. J. Gallagher, of Kingsford), and three sons, John (Randwick), Frank (Walgett) and Ray (Punchbowl).
The funeral after Requiem Mass at St. Jerome's Church, Punchbowl, was to the Catholic portion of the Liverpool cemetery. Rev. Fr. Clark officiated, both at the church and the graveside.4
