Article*8 January 1948 "The Nepean Times", Penrith, NSW;
Death of Mr. George Sheens, Senr.
Another member of an honoured district family, Mr. George Sheens, of Union Road, Penrith, has passed to his rest. He had been ailing on and off for some time, though he had been about town a few days before his death, which took place about 10 a.m. on New Year’s Day, at the age of 77 years.
In his earlier days Mr. Sheens engaged in wool-washing, and afterwards entered the railway service, in which he continued for many years, till his retirement. He lived in Penrith district all his life, for many years in Union Road. In his younger days he was a keen cricketer, taking part in local matches with much success.
Deceased married Emily Mann, who was born in London and came to Australia when she was 16 years of age. Her father was licensee of a hotel in London and her brother was an international Rugby footballer. She died on January 27, 1947.
Mr. George Sheens, Jnr., of Union Road, is a son of deceased, who also leaves the undermentioned brothers and sisters: Arthur (Emu Plains), Fred (Emu Plains), Allan (Penrith), Mrs. George Willett (Lambridge), and Mrs. Major Stanton (Sydney). Within the last couple of years three other brothers, Messrs. Bob, Peter and James Sheens, passed on. Mr. Jim Sheens, it will be recalled, died from injuries in an accident with a dray.
The funeral which was well attended, took place on Friday, 2nd inst., when the remains were interred in the C. of E. portion of the Penrith general cemetery. The service was conducted by the Rector, Rev. A. E. Hodgson.
A large number of wreaths were forwarded, including one from Penrith Fire Brigade, of which Mr. George Sheens, Jnr., is a member.12
