Boy's Sad End.
Tramway Accident.
At Ryde Courthouse on Tuesday morning the Coroner inquired into the circumstances surrounding the death of a boy named Joseph Regent, the 16-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Regent, of Higinbotham-street, Ryde. On September 10th, deceased was riding a pony, and came into collision with a city hound tram near the Weaver loop, at Ryde.
Evidence was tendered by John Regent, father of the boy, William Joseph Hansen, driver of the tram, and George Francis McInnes, the conductor. It was the 8.38 p.m. tram, Ryde to Sydney, which, at the time of the accident, was travelling at the rate of 10 miles an hour. The driver's evidence went to show that everything possible was done to avert the accident.
Mr. Downing appeared to represent the Commissioners.
The Coroner found that the boy met his death as the result of injuries accidentally received. The incident was a most regrettable one, and he extended to the relatives of the boy the deepest sympathy, on his own behalf and that of the Commissioners. He added that the driver of the tram had impressed him as having done all that was possible to avert the accident, and he paid a tribute to the carefulness exhibited by tramway men generally in driving through the streets.4
