Obituary.
Henry T. Purcell.
On Tuesday night there passed away at his residence, “Woodville,” Redbank, one of the oldest and most universally respected residents of the district, in the person of Mr. Henry T. Purcell. The deceased gentleman had attained the Patriarchal age of 90 years. Up to about twelve months ago our subject enjoyed the best of health, and took an active part in the working of his farm, but the weight of years compelled him to band over his work to younger bands of late. Eight or nine days prior to his death he took to his bed, and on Tuesday night be passed peacefull away to his sleep, death being due to senile decay. The late Mr Purcell was a native of Penrith, and spent his early years about the Hawkesbury district. He came out to this State with the 73rd Regiment, who were escorting a batch of convicts, and was a Chief Magistrate under Governor Bligh. Fifty years ago the deceased gentleman left his native heath, and selected land at Cundumbul, on which he laboured for some 24 years. Disposing of his Cundumbul property, he acquired his present holding at Redbank, and went in for mixed farming with much success. He was a man who never minced matters—what he thought, he was not afraid to voice; in truth he was as straight as the proverbial gun barrel. The district has lost an upright, good dispositioned man in Harry Purcell—a man who always hastened to discharge every obligation he was under. He leaves a widow and five sons and three daughters, the latter being Mrs F. Cole (Redbank), Mrs H. Cole (Cudal), and Miss Emma Purcell (Sydney). Of the sons, John and Charles are in Queensland, Henry is in Victoria, Edward resides at Nyngan, Ensign Purcell being the only son at home. Two daughters pre-deceased him. He also leaves 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The funeral took place on Thursday, the remains being interred in the Anglican section of the Molong Cemetery.6
